The cottage story

Where you finally stop answering email.

The first time most guests come to Captain's Cottage, they arrive on a Friday evening, half-frantic from the drive down, and step onto the screened porch to a kind of quiet they had forgotten about. The dock catches the last of the sun. An osprey works the creek. Inside the cottage, three bedrooms, an open kitchen, the cedar sauna warming for whoever wants it first.

By Sunday morning, no one is checking the time. Tide is the only schedule. The kids are pulling the crab pot off the dock. The coffee is on the porch table. The book you brought is open to the same page you started on Friday because you keep getting up to look at the water.

This is what the Northern Neck does. It is Virginia's quietest secret, a long peninsula reaching east where the Potomac meets the Chesapeake Bay. We bought the cottage in the fall of 2022 and have been refining it ever since — every choice in service of the same idea: a place to disconnect, on the water, that does not feel like anything other than itself.

  1. We pulled crab pots at sunrise and watched osprey work the creek. Three days later none of us wanted to leave.

    Maya — Brooklyn, NY

  2. The sauna alone is worth the trip. Add the dock, the porches, the way the light moves across the water — this is a real place.

    Daniel — Washington, DC

  3. Will thought of everything. The cottage is beautiful, but the part that stayed with us was the quiet.
